Using processes of appropriation and collage Adam King's recent works on paper explore scenarios and open-ended narratives in which art historical and cultural references are reconfigured, re-contextualised and combined.
By re-working images and signs from the past within vistas that speak of contemporary urban spaces he aims to suggest new meanings and possibilities. The works explore a process in which references are variously sifted, filtered and re-ordered through his imagination and a sensibility that speaks of an urban mindset.
The use of collage in which the materials show traces of origin is composed with drawing and painting in compositions that combine figurative and abstract elements. The resulting cut and paste cosmologies are swirling panorama shot through with a sense of fantasy and the surreal and imbued with an inner logic.
A sense of precariousness is counterbalanced with a feeling of optimism even celebration. Not-quite-fairytale vistas playfully hover between genre, resisting classification. These terrains reveal the explorations of a meandering tourist who experiences the unfamiliar fleetingly with a knowing distance.
